Naturex partners with Scionix Ltd on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents and unveils its new EutectysTM botanical collection at Cosmetagora 2016.
Avignon, December 2015 – Nature-inspired products have been setting the trend over the last few years as cosmetic formulators are constantly looking to expand the category in a sustainable way. Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NaDES) - a new type of natural solvents that reproduce the plants’intracellular environment - are an innovative way to answer market demand. Indeed, while the most active molecules are synthesized at the very core of the plant cell, some of these metabolites are not always fully soluble in water or in lipid phases. Plants may instead store and transport these compounds in a third type of liquid phase: the so-called natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES).
Unveiling the Eutectys™ collection at Cosmetagora
At the upcoming Cosmetagora show, to be held in Paris in January, Naturex will showcase Eutectys™. This new botanical extract collection is based on a patented extraction process called Eutectigenesis, which consists of extracting the active compounds of the plant through the formation of NaDES. Eutectys™ is composed of six high-definition extracts that have undergone Eutectigenesis; this breakthrough eco-extraction technology offers a natural alternative to conventional solvents and makes it possible to capture the plant cell’s most precious metabolites, in order to obtain biomimetic extracts with augmented phytoactive profiles and improved performance. This botanical collection includes, among others, olive leaf, saffron flower, and horsetail, all well-known for their restoring and anti-ageing properties, and available for skin and hair formulations.
Licensing agreement and research collaboration with Scionix Ltd
For years, extensive research has been conducted on deep eutectic solvents by Professor Andrew Abbott. Abbott and his research group discovered these solvents more than ten years ago*, and were granted the first-ever patents** on both deep eutectic solvents and their use as extractant and/or formulation fluids. Naturex has acquired an exclusive license on these patents thus strengthening its number one position in this area. In addition to this licensing agreement, Naturex and Scionix will join forces on fundamental and applied research in the field.
“The use of deep eutectic solvents holds huge potential for the cosmetic category as well as numerous other industries. We are convinced that this technology is a game-changing innovation, and these joint research efforts in collaboration with the team that discovered NaDES technology will ensure rapid and successful results,” says Antoine Bily, Naturex’s Head of Research & Development.
“This is a very exciting development in the area of deep eutectic solvents. It has been a long term goal of Scionix to develop liquid formulations which borrow their design from nature. We see this landmark collaboration with Naturex as the start of a new era for natural product extraction.” said Andrew Abbott, Professor at the University of Leicester.

Scionix Limited is a Joint Venture between Genacys Ltd (subsidiary of Whyte Group Ltd) and the University of Leicester. The company was set-up in 1999 to commercialise the industrial use of a novel class of solvent systems. Scionix is developing business in several areas including metal plating, metal polishing, ore refinery, biocatalysis, cleaning and synthesis.
These solvents, which are known as Ionic Liquids are in effect room temperature salt melts and are highly polar. Among many of their idiosyncrasies is the fact that they do not exhibit a vapour pressure, ie they do not evaporate at room temperature. Furthermore, due to their polarity and ability to complex ions, they also solubilise compounds and salts which normally would only dissolve in highly corrosive or caustic aqueous solutions. These revolutionary solvents are not only cheap to produce and store - but they are also unreactive to air and moisture.
